I have yet to read “James and the Giant Peach” for this very reason. I seem to remember it being a required book to read waaaayyy back in elementary or middle school, but I didn’t do it.

I’m lucky in that you’ll be hardpressed to find the name Pamela in a grade school book, but that didn’t stop the slew of Pamela Anderson jokes. Like please my tits are normal sized and I’m black…couldn’t be Pam Grier or something?

Something funny about, the other day i actually thought about your name being Pam and Pam Grier being a Pam. I don’t remember the context though because I think it was just a random thought stream.

You were randomly thinking about how awesome it would be to see two sexy black chicks named Pamela kicking ass, of course.

LOL
As the only Jewish girl in my grade (and one of the like……3 in the whole school) I never encountered this, because no one in any book unless it’s in hebrew or about the torah is name Tamar. Tamara maybe, but never Tamar.
If there was a Jew in a book everyone would look to me though. That made reading Anne Frank really fun. :|

See now that’s just awkward, I remember when there was an optional field trip to the Blacks In Wax Museum and only like one white guy went….*phew* jesus talk about REALLY Awkward when the guide started talking about some of  the racial  stuff and the grim details surrounding lynchings…

Try being named “Eden.”
In a religious state.
People think they’re really funny.

I have to say, I’ve never once encountered a book character named Erin… So I never have a problem there. There was a girl named Erin who was the victim of a horrible murder on one of the few episodes of Dexter I’ve ever seen though… Walking home in the dark that night was… difficult…
